Many pregnant women begin to experience numbness, tingling, and difficulty holding objects in their thumb, index finger, and middle finger starting from the 7th month of pregnancy, which worsens at night. clinical It's called "carpal tunnel syndrome" and may be related to pregnancy.
Why does this happen easily during pregnancy?
On the flexor side of the human wrist, there is a tube formed by the carpal bones and ligaments called the carpal tunnel. There are 9 tendons in the carpal tunnel and a central nerve pass. Under normal circumstances, the synovium secretes an appropriate amount of lubricating fluid to allow the tendons to slide normally within the sheath. In late pregnancy, the amount of synovial secretion increases. In addition, there are abundant capillaries in the carpal tunnel, and a large amount of fluid leaks out of these blood vessels and lymphatic tissues in the third trimester of pregnancy. The carpal tunnel is connected to the forearm and palm. When general edema and tissue pressure increase in late pregnancy, the connected carpal tunnel will inevitably be affected. When the pressure in the carpal tunnel increases, it will compress the median nerve and cause symptoms: numbness, pain and loss of grip strength in the hand, aggravation of symptoms at night, etc. There are two other important signs: when the wrist joint is bent to 90 degrees, there is abnormal pain in the hand ; When tapping on the flexor side of the wrist, a tingling or ant-like sensation may occur in the hand. Diagnosis is easier if combined with electromyography. Treatment mainly targets the cause of the disease, using dehydration diuretics, reducing salt intake, and reducing or eliminating tissue edema. ; In addition, the affected limb should be elevated to increase the return of venous and lymphatic fluid and reduce edema in the affected area. Analgesics and sedatives can also be used appropriately. For severe pain, local sealing in the carpal tunnel can be added, and the effect is obvious. Generally, symptoms will gradually ease after delivery.
