Menstrual discomfort can be relieved by supplementing vitamin D and calcium tablets

Premenstrual syndrome commonly plagues the childbearing years female . Recent research in the United States points out that vitamin D and calcium can alleviate premenstrual syndrome. The research results were published in the July issue of the American Journal of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Elizabeth Burton John of Massachusetts, USA, conducted a large-scale study called "Nursing healthy Research" investigation. The study lasted for 10 years, and the subjects of the investigation were 1,057 women aged 27-44 who had been diagnosed with premenstrual syndrome, and 1,968 asymptomatic women as controls. Studies have found that daily supplementation of 1,200 mg of calcium and 400 international units of vitamin D can reduce anxiety, loneliness, excitement, sadness, tension, etc., and reduce the risk of premenstrual syndrome by 40%.

Researchers point out that even in Western societies, women don't get enough calcium and vitamin D. The recommended daily amount of vitamin D is 400 international units, and the recommended amount of calcium for adult women is: 1,000 mg of calcium per day for women aged 19 to 50 ; Ages 51 and older require 1,200 mg per day. But only 1/5 of people get the recommended amounts of calcium and vitamin D in their diet.

Researchers suggest that calcium and vitamin D are best absorbed through food. For example, eating 4 servings of low-fat dairy products a day is a good choice, as is cheese or fortified orange juice.

As for whether medication is needed to address insufficient calcium and vitamin D intake, Imory University Gynecology Stephen Stephens, a physician, recommends that those with premenstrual syndrome or those who rarely drink dairy products can try taking calcium supplements. Of course, it is best to take medicine under the guidance of a doctor.
