At present, the most well-known nutritional rice flour brands for the elderly in the domestic market mainly include Heinz nutritional rice flour for middle-aged and elderly people, Nestlé Yiyang special formula rice flour, Wugumofang prebiotic rice flour for the elderly, Jiangzhong dietary therapy Hericium stomach-protecting rice flour. Southern Black Sesame has also launched a series of high-speed iron and high calcium rice noodles for the elderly. Many old local grain and oil brands also have corresponding niche products, and the audience loyalty is not low.
A while ago, when I helped my 82-year-old grandma choose rice noodles, I did some homework. I went through some pitfalls at first and chose a small brand that is popular on the Internet. It was so sweet that it made me sick. My grandma has type 2 diabetes and her blood sugar dropped after just one meal. Later, she switched to the sucrose-free version from Nestlé. The formula is Ammonia sugar and vitamin D were also added, just as she usually had knee pain, legs and feet. After drinking it for less than half a year, although it could not cure the leg pain, at least the nutrition kept up, and it did not raise extra sugar. Now she is too lazy to make porridge in the morning, so she just makes a bowl with a small steamed bun, which is convenient and warms her stomach.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that expensive food is suitable for everyone. For example, my neighbor Uncle Zhang had intestinal surgery a while ago and the doctor asked him to eat liquid food. His family bought him the Jiangzhong type, which was added with Hericium erinaceus and small molecule protein. It came out very fine, had no residue, would not get stuck in the throat, and was less burdensome on the gastrointestinal tract. He said it was more flavorful and filling than the rice soup he cooked at home, and he successfully transitioned to a normal diet after half a month.
Nowadays, many people think that pre-packaged rice noodles are not as healthy as those ground by grinders at home. This statement actually makes sense on both sides. The ingredients of self-ground rice noodles are indeed transparent and no additional additives are added. However, regular brands of rice noodles are proportioned according to the nutritional needs of the elderly, with additional additions to their daily diet. For iron, zinc, and B vitamins that are easily deficient, the ones you grind yourself often only have pure grains, which are relatively simple in nutrition. If the elderly have a better metabolism and have no nutritional deficiencies, grinding them yourself is no problem. If you are deficient in nutrients or have particularly bad teeth or poor digestion, it is more worry-free to choose the formula of a regular brand.
When choosing, don’t just focus on the brand. If the first item on the ingredient list is white sugar or fructose syrup, don’t buy it no matter how cheap it is. Especially for the elderly with diabetes and high blood pressure, be sure to look for products that are clearly marked “no added sucrose” and don’t be fooled by the packaging. Some of the "low sugar" and "sugar-free" deceptions are made with xylitol or maltitol added, which can easily cause diarrhea for the elderly with sensitive stomachs. It is most important to try a few more products to find the taste that the elderly like. After all, no matter how good the formula is, it is in vain if the elderly refuse to eat it.
