What’s the matter with excessive leucorrhea before menstruation?

Increased leucorrhea before menstruation may be caused by changes in hormone levels, vaginitis, cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, etc. It can be alleviated by keeping clean, medication, physical therapy, etc.

1. Changes in hormone levels

Elevated estrogen levels before menstruation will stimulate increased cervical mucus secretion, which manifests as transparent or milky white leucorrhea without obvious odor or itching. This is a physiological change and does not require special treatment. It is recommended to wash the perineum with warm water every day and avoid using irritating lotions. If there is bloating in the lower abdomen, you can use a hot water bottle to relieve the discomfort.

2. Vaginitis

Fungal vaginitis may cause leucorrhea that looks like tofu, while bacterial vaginosis is common with grayish-white, fishy-smelling discharge. It may be related to factors such as frequent vaginal washing and decreased immunity. You can use clotrimazole vaginal tablets to treat fungal infections or metronidazole suppositories to fight bacterial infections as directed by your doctor. At the same time, you need to avoid sexual intercourse until the symptoms disappear.

3. Cervicitis

Cervicitis caused by chlamydia or gonococcal infection will lead to an increase in yellow purulent leucorrhea, which may be accompanied by bleeding after sexual intercourse. Diagnosis needs to be confirmed through cervical secretion testing. Commonly used drugs include azithromycin dispersible tablets or doxycycline capsules. Sexual intercourse should be prohibited during treatment, and sexual partners need to be checked simultaneously.

4. Pelvic inflammatory disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease may cause excessive and yellow-green leucorrhea before menstruation, which is often accompanied by persistent pain and fever in the lower abdomen. It is mostly related to ascending infection and requires intravenous injection of ceftriaxone sodium combined with doxycycline. Severe cases require hospitalization. In the acute stage, you should stay in bed, and bathing in the bath is prohibited to avoid aggravating the infection.

5. Endometriosis

Irritation of ectopic endometrial tissue may cause brown discharge to appear prematurely, often accompanied by severe dysmenorrhea. Preliminary judgment can be made through ultrasonic examination, and laparoscopy is required to confirm the diagnosis. In mild cases, ibuprofen sustained-release capsules can be used to relieve pain, while in moderate to severe cases, goserelin sustained-release implants need to be injected to suppress estrogen secretion.

It is recommended to choose cotton breathable underwear and change it daily, and avoid using sanitary pads for more than 4 hours during menstruation. If the abnormal leucorrhea lasts for more than 3 menstrual cycles, or bloody discharge, vulvar ulcers and other symptoms occur, you need to see a gynecologist in time. You can drink an appropriate amount of sugar-free yogurt daily to regulate vaginal flora, but it cannot replace drug treatment.
