The most intuitive manifestation of the health of male hormones (the core component is testosterone accounting for more than 95%) is actually that the overall energy and physiological state are within a stable and comfortable range, rather than the external characteristics such as thick body hair, large muscles, and prominent Adam's apple in the popular stereotype. I have been in the men's clinic for almost 6 years, and I have met too many people who are anxious about online symptoms. Last week, I picked up a 27-year-old boy who said that he was born with less beard and light leg hair. He was afraid that insufficient hormones would affect his future preparations for pregnancy. I took blood to check six sex hormones. The testosterone level soared to 19nmol/L, which is higher than that of an adult male. The average reference value is still a bit higher, but the guy who came with him was a little boy who looked particularly "manly" with his beard. He complained that he had always felt tired in the past six months. He slumped on the sofa when he got home from get off work, and the number of intimate interactions with his girlfriend was reduced by half. After a quick check, his testosterone was just at the edge of the lower limit of the reference value.
The opinions about male hormones on the Internet are very mixed now, and there are even many completely contradictory opinions. Some people say that having more body hair means high testosterone, some people say that having little body hair means that the hormones are abnormal, and some people argue that hair loss is caused by too high testosterone, and conversely, some people say that hair loss is caused by too low testosterone. In fact, these opinions are too one-sided. Taking androgenetic alopecia as an example, the core cause is the stimulation of susceptible hair follicles by dihydrotestosterone (DHT) produced by testosterone metabolism, and there is no absolute correlation with the overall serum testosterone level. I have seen many men with excessive testosterone levels who do not lose their hair at all, and I have also seen people with testosterone slightly lower than the reference value have hair loss on the top of their heads. It is impossible to make blind judgments based on external characteristics alone.
If you really want to make your own preliminary judgment, you don’t have to look at the naturally different features such as beard, Adam’s apple, and muscles. Just look at your daily status: if you have a regular work and rest schedule, you won’t be groggy every day. After a big night, you can recover in a day at most, and you won’t be unable to lift for three or four days in a row. Be energetic; have a normal desire for intimacy that is consistent with your age, and will not be without ideas for two or three months in a row; nor will your muscle mass inexplicably decrease without deliberately losing weight, and the fat on your belly will accumulate more and more; your mood will not be irritable or depressed for no reason, and you will always feel that nothing is interesting.
Of course, these are just preliminary feelings. If you really suspect that you have a hormonal problem, don't blindly judge the symptoms on the Internet. Go to a regular hospital to draw venous blood and check the six sex hormones. The results are more accurate than anything else. After all, individual differences are really huge. Some people are born with light body hair. Is it possible to insist that other people's hormones are unhealthy, right?
